I was commissioned to create a work about painter Alvin Sella for the Alabama State Council on the Arts’ Annual Awards Ceremony. Sella was being honored with a Governor’s Arts Award at the event in Montgomery. I worked with stories about Sella from his students and colleagues in addition to looking at many samples of his art in order to find an interpretation of his personality and his art through movement. Working under the specific direction and requirements of the director of the ceremony added a different challenge to the work. The song, Come Fly With Me, by Frank Sinatra (Sella’s favorite singer) was chosen as the accompaniment for the work, so in addition to my goal to embody aspects of Sella and his art, I also had to make it work to the music.
