I thoroughly enjoyed a very collaborative process with my dancers in putting this work together. We began the first several rehearsals with writing assignments in which I asked the dancers to describe in as much detail as possible different relationships in their lives. The dancers wrote about family dynamics, first loves, best friends, first kisses, significant others, and people who had really touched their lives in some way. From the writings, we then created movement gestures and phrases which were the seed material for the entire work. I believe the dancers connected to this piece in a special way, knowing that their stories and lives were being represented on the stage. The music was several selections from The Magnetic Field’s “Sixty Nine Love Songs” Album. All the songs on the album were about different aspects of relationship and I chose music based more on timing, rhythm, and quality than lyrics. I enjoyed showing the dancers a way to use music with lyric, without relying on lyrics to create movement.
