Sun Ra Project

I'll Build a World and Wait for You (University of Alabama)

The Wayfaring Kind (Alabama State University)

Based on the music and philosophy of Alabama artist Sun Ra, these works were inspired by the idea of a journey and Sun Ra's song "Lanquidity". Dancers created maps of their lives and a list of words relating to a journey to generate movement material. Overarching ideas of fluidity, traveling, honoring individuality and a collective journey were utilized for multiple casts at two different universities. The beginning and ending of the dances were the same, but due to the dancers' contributions, the bulk of the material varied for the meat of the dance. It was a beautiful process to see how these dancers took the prompts and ideas and created two unique works.
